Among the intellectual elite of the Vaullians, a philosophy has developed... one rooted in century old beliefs, deep meditation and observation of the Universe. Vaullian scholars refer to an intangible force that shapes the Universe, controls the flow of events and permeates all events, actions, reactions, thoughts and emotions. This force envelops, surrounds and flows through all things. It regulates natural processes and maintains the balance between good and evil, light and darkness, love and hate. It is the harmony of opposites.
Vaullian mysticism was born as a way to obtain serenity amidst the chaos of the Great War. Founded by a vaullian scholar named Unar in 440 CY, Vaullian Mysticism was originally a blend of psychology, philosophy and natural science, but later evolved into a pseudo-religious faith when it was widely embraced in southeastern Aggradar. In some circles, Unar is venerated as a deity. Mysticism was embraced by Vaul and become the unofficial state religion in the early 18th century.
There are no formal priests of this religion and no rank. Every mystic is seen as equal. Mystics meditate at dawn and dusk each day, typically for a half hour or more. They also spend a part of each day in quiet contemplation of nature. This will be typically done in a quiet garden, on a mountain top, on a riverbank or some other visually pleasing setting. It is during this time that the mystic communes with Nature.
Vaullian mystics all wear a ring with Unar's symbol. They greet each other by exchanging rings. Each ring is unique, but all bear the symbol of Unar.
This is a varied religion. For some mystics, it is a private and personal religion. At other times, vaullian mystics will often come together in formal groups that build serene temples with grand gardens and serene stone sculptures.
Music is an important and central aspect of Vaullian mysticism. The Universe is seen as a balance of opposing forces on many levels and the struggle to maintain these balances is the symphony of the cosmos. Vaullians use music as a metaphor for their models of the universe. It relates to the metaphysical mathematics of their theories. Music also plays an important part in meditation. Most vaullians will chant or use an instrument. The most common instrument used is the chanter pipe, because of its rich sound and ability to play a vast spectrum of notes. Through long centuries, Vaullian mystics have developed an entire language using only musical notes. This vastly complex system is very mathematical in nature and reflects the sweeping precision with which they view the Universe. It is possible to communicate ideas and deliver messages solely with this music.
Vaullian mystics come together in great councils once each month to meditate, to debate, to commune. Instruments are played at these gatherings in which mystics will debate back and forth using only sound and music and chanting. At times, when many mystics are involved, the music will rise and fall in great waves as the mystics debate long into the night.
